Fibroids Management

Uterine fibroids (leiomyomas) are non-cancerous muscular growths arising from the wall of the uterus. They may develop within the uterine wall (intramural), on the outer surface of the uterus (subserosal), or inside the uterine cavity (submucosal). Depending on their size, number, and location, fibroids may or may not cause symptoms.

Women with fibroids may experience heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), prolonged periods, pelvic pain or pressure, abdominal swelling, frequent urination, constipation, bowel-related symptoms, infertility, or recurrent pregnancy loss. Some fibroids are detected incidentally during routine ultrasound examinations.

Treatment is individualized and depends on the patient’s age, symptoms, size and location of the fibroids, fertility wishes, and overall health. Not all fibroids require surgery, and many can be managed conservatively with regular follow-up or medications.

For women requiring intervention, minimally invasive laparoscopic myomectomy is available for suitable cases, allowing removal of fibroids while preserving the uterus. Hysteroscopic myomectomy is an excellent option for fibroids located inside the uterine cavity. Women who wish to avoid surgery or preserve their uterus may also be candidates for Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE), a non-surgical procedure that reduces the blood supply to the fibroid, causing it to shrink.
