Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus, commonly involving the ovaries, fallopian tubes, pelvic lining, and surrounding organs. This condition can cause inflammation, scarring, and adhesions, significantly affecting a woman’s quality of life and fertility.

Women with endometriosis commonly experience severe menstrual pain (dysmenorrhoea), heavy menstrual bleeding, chronic pelvic pain, pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia), painful bowel movements or urination during menstruation, infertility or subfertility, and, in some cases, lower back pain. Symptoms may gradually worsen over time and often interfere with daily activities.

Diagnosis is based on a detailed clinical evaluation, pelvic examination, ultrasound, and, when required, diagnostic laparoscopy, which remains the gold standard for confirming endometriosis. Treatment is individualized according to the severity of symptoms, age, fertility plans, and extent of the disease. Management may include pain-relieving medications, hormonal therapy, lifestyle modifications, and advanced laparoscopic surgery to remove endometriotic lesions while preserving fertility whenever possible.
